| Hellingly Rugby Club was formed in 1974 by a group of three rugby fanatics, who, over a few too many pints in the local pub, decided that they should set up a rugby team. So with no clubhouse or showers, they somehow managed to get some fixtures using a pitch on the local recreation ground. Rounding up anyone keen (or supid) enough to join them, they soon had enough regular players to enter the leagues, and whilst still drinking in the local hostelry after games. So began the legend that is Hellingly Rugby Club. In 2000 the clubhouse was ????? 31 years later, Hellingly Rugby Club has firmly establised itself in Sussex Rugby, running 2 mens teams, a ladies team and thriving mini's and junior sections. Drifting happily between Sussex 1 and 2 and often causing the odd upset each year, the club is a fine example of rugby surviving at grass roots level. In 2005 the 1st XV gained promotion to ????? The club has a strong reputation for it's friendly and social welcome to all who visit. It prides itself on strong team spirit and a happy family atmosphere - giving players the chance to enjoy their rugby in a social environment. Oh, and why the "The Loonies"? - the nickname was derived from the local mental hospital that used to be situated nearby in Hellingly. Perhaps that explains the vacant stares on most of the players faces.............
